Moringa oleifera extract as an antiseptic towards Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria by using percentage kill in Clinical Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia.

Streptococcus pyogenes, is one of the most common Gram positive bacteria which have the capacity to elicit various clinical manifestations in the human body, including infection. Moringa oleifera, a species of plant derived from the Moringaceae family is known for containing active components with pharmacological and antimicrobial abilities, specifically actives found in the leaves. The aim of this research is to determine the effectivity of Moringa oleifera leaves extract in suppressing the growth of Streptococcus pyogenes. The Percentage kill method is utilized to analyze the capacity of Moringa oleifera leaves extract in killing Streptococcus pyogenes within three contact time. Based on this research it is discovered that the Percentage Kill in minute 1, 2, and 5 are 73.27%, 83.15%, dan 94.188%. The result found in the fifth minute is categorized as good as it fulfilled the minimum criteria of ≥ 90%. In conclusion, the Moringa oleifera leaves extract presented a good antimicrobial activity in a contact time of 5 minute.

Streptococcus pyogenes adalah salah satu bakteri patogen Gram positif yang dapat menyebabkan berbagai manifestasi klinis pada manusia, termasuk infeksi. Sedangkan Moringa oleifera, tumbuhan yang berasal dari family Moringaceae diketahui mengandung banyak zat aktif dengan fungsi farmakologis serta kapasitas antimikroba terutama pada bagian daun tumbuhan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui efektifitas ekstrak daun Moringa oleifera dalam menghambat pertumbuhan Streptococcus pyogenes. Metode Percentage Kill digunakan dalam penelitian untuk menganalisa kapasitas ekstrak daun Moringa oleifera dalam membunuh Streptococcus pyogenes dalam tiga waktu kontak. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan nilai Percentage Kill pada menit 1, 2, dan 5 adalah 73.27%, 83.15%, dan 94.188%. Hasil yang terbaik diperoleh pada menit 5 yang memenuhi syarat minimal ≥ 90%. Maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa ekstrak daun M. oleifera memiliki fungsi antimikrobial yang baik terhadap Streptococcus pyogenes dengan waktu kontak 5 menit.
