The Association of Shift Work and Infertility in Female Workers: Evidence-Based Case Report.

Introduction Infertility in women was ranked the 5 th highest serious global disability among populations under the age of 60. The prevalence of primary infertility among Indonesian women in 2010 was around 2.7%. Shift work patterns were suspected of affecting the female reproductive health, mainly in difficulty in conceiving and miscarriage, through circadian rhythm changes. There was still poor knowledge on the association between shift work and infertility since the studies showed inconsistent finding. The objective of this report is to determine the association of shift work to infertility using time to pregnancy (TTP). Methods The literature searching was conducted through electronic databases PubMed, Scopus and Cochrane. The inclusion criteria were female or women population; the outcomes measurement in TTP (month or cycle); study design cohort study, case control study, systematic review. The selected articles were appraised using Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for non-randomized study and criteria from Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine for randomized trial or systematic review. Result From literature searching two studies were selected. The cohort study of North American women found no reduction in fecundability for women who worked in any shift. Compared with no night or shift work, Fecundability Ratio for night and shift worker 0.99 (95% CI, 0.87-1.14). A systematic review in 2014 found women who working in shifts had higher rates of infertility (11.3%) than women who did not (9.9%) (OR 1.80, 95% CI 1.01–3.20, I 2 94%) with considerable heterogeneity. Pooled analysis was no significant association (adjusted OR 1.11, 95% CI 0.86–1.44, I 2 = 61%). Conclusion Based on the evidence found in this report, no association between shift work and infertility in female workers was found. There were many other factors of occupational, individual and lifestyle also affect infertility.
