Antibacterial Effects of Carica papaya L. Seeds Extract in Ethanol 96% Towards E. coli = Efek Antibakteri Ekstrak Biji Pepaya Dalam Etanol 96% Terhadap E. coli

Eschericia coli (E. coli) is considered a worldwide problem especially in developing countries causing foodborne diseases, urinary tract infections and hematogenous infections. Adding to the problem E. coli has also become more drug resistant. Hence the search for an alterative is essential. Traditional herbs, especially in developing countries is often used, one of them being papaya seeds. This research was aimed to discover if papaya seed has antibacterial effect towards E. coli. The papaya seed was sundried and processed into an extract diluted in ethanol 96% in order to obtain concentrations of 33%, 22%, 16.5% and 11%. The study design used was lab experimentation using dilution method in order to obtain Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC). Result of data was compared to a control group which is where the E. coli is challenged by Ciprofloxacin of 3200 microliter/ml. Data yielded was semi-quantitative and is processed by descriptive analysis. From the results, it was found that 16.5% of papaya seed extract is the MIC and MBC towards E. coli. Conclusion of this research was that papaya seed has antibacterial effect towards E. coli.

Eschericia coli (E. coli) merupakan penyebab masalah kesehatan di seluruh dunia, khusunya di negara berkembang. Ditambah lagi dengan peningkatan kejadian resistensi E. coli terhadap berbagai antibiotik, maka pengobatan alternatif sangatlah penting. Tanaman sudah digunakan oleh banyak negara berkembang dalam pengobatan tradisional antara lain adalah biji pepaya. Tujuan dari riset adalah untuk mengetahui efek antibakteri biji pepaya terhadap E. coli. Biji pepaya dikeringkan kemudian dilanjutkan dengan pembentukan ekstrak dengan fraksi etanol 96%. Ekstrak biji pepaya kemudian diencerkan menjadi berbagai konsetrasi yaitu 33%, 22%, 16.5% dan 11%. Kemudian dilakukan uji kepekaan antibiotik menggunakan metode mikrodilusi untuk mendapatkan Konsentrasi Hambat Minimal (KHM) dan Konsentrasi Bakterisidal Minimal (KBM). Dari penelitian diperoleh KHM dan KBM sebesar 16.5% ekstrak biji pepaya. Riset ini menyimpulkan bahwa biji pepaya mempunyai efek antibakteri terhadap E. coli.
