Practice of prostate spesific antigen blood test and digital rectal examination among fathers of FMUI International Class Student Batch 2005-2007.

Objective: To study the practice of fathers of FMUI student in doing early detection for prostate cancer Background: Prostate cancer is the 10th most common cancer in male and 2nd most common urology cancer. Moreover, the number of patients increases each year, with broader risk factors. That is why Prostate cancer early detection is needed to be done in order to prevent high mortality rate and worst outcome of prostate cancer patient. Methods: This study was a cross sectional descriptive study, using primary data that were obtained by using questionnaires that were given to fathers of FMUI student batch 2005 to 2007. The questionnaire was made based on the concept of Health Belief Model, and the result was analyzed descriptively Results: From 28 samples, 20 fathers had never done either PSA blood test or DRE, 7 fathers had undergone PSA blood test, and none of them ever underwent DRE. Most of them didn’t think that they were likely susceptible to prostate cancer. However, they admitted that prostate cancer was a dangerous disease and agree that the beneficial effect of prostate cancer early detection screening. They also think that time has been their main barrier and followed by lack of information about the prostate cancer or its’ early detection screening. Despite that, most of them agree that mass media (TV, magazine, newspaper, poster, etc) has been their main source of information about prostate cancer. Conclusion: The level of practice of early screening for prostate cancer among fathers is seriously low. Some of fathers (8 persons) have undergone PSA blood test, with only 3 done it regularly. However, most of them never undergone DRE. Their main reasons were because most of them have lack of time and don’t have adequate information about prostate cancer and its’ early screening.
