The use of optical coherence tomography to determine the effects of aloe vera gel in dermal wound healing in mice.

Background: Delayed wound healing with side effects may increase the time of patient immobile, return to their daily activities. and increases the cost for medical therapy. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of Aloe vera in accelerating wound healing and the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) as a novel therapeutic tool to assess the progress of wound healing in mice. Methods: The mice were divided into two experimental groups: 1) Mice treated with Aloe vera once daily; 2) Mice treated with Aloe vera twice daily, and two control groups: 1) Mice treated with Ethanol once daily, 2) Mice treated with Ethanol twice daily. On day 0, full-thickness skin incision was made on the back of mice. On days 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10, mice wound were assessed using OCT. After mice sacrifice on day 10, wound tissues were examined histologically using H&E staining. Results: OCT findings showed no significant differences in profile intensities between all groups compared. However, histological analysis found that application of Aloe vera twice daily has qualitative improvement in wound healing compared to control group. Also, Aloe vera application twice daily improves wound healing compared to once daily. Conclusion & Recommendations: This study provides the evidence that Aloe vera gel twice daily could improve wound healing. However, we found that OCT is not a reliable tool to assess progress in wound healing compared to histology.
