Evaluation of the effect of regiment III of chemotherapy in lymphoma patients to chromosal aberrations using G - banding technique

ABSTRACT : Cancer is a leading cause of death in many countries. Lymphoma is a cancer that affects many systems in our body. The result of lymphoma may cause a great economical and social burden to the individuals and also to the community. Treatments aim to treat lymphoma are chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Although great advances have been achieved through the use of novel chemotherapeutic agents that may kill cancer cells more effectively, however, side effects due to those chemotherapeutic agents are still prominent. Those side effects that are clinically visible include lost of hair, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and many more. Besides that, side effects that are not clinically prominent are present and may cause unnecessary debilitation in later life such as chromosomal or DNA breaks due to the chemotherapeutic agents. In this research the chromosomal aberration are observed. The samples were taken from Hematology Oncology Department RSCM and the samples were from lymphoma patients that undergone chemotherapy. The samples were peripheral blood that were then cultured and banded with G-banding technique to see the chromosomal aberration. The agents that were used for treating all of these lymphoma patients were rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone. The samples were taken twice; the first was before the chemotherapy was initiated. The second was after the chemotherapy had been given for three cycles, then the samples were retaken. The result is that chromosomal or DNA breaks are observed in major patients undergoing chemotherapy.
