Comparison Study of Harris Hip Score, Oxford Hip Score, and Hip Disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score in Hip Fracture Patients Following Hemiartrhoplasty

Background: In the holistic concept of medicine, the outcome of surgery will greatly affect one’s function and quality of life. Such is the case in orthopedic surgery, where many questionnaires have been developed to evaluate patients’ functional outcome after surgery such as hemiarthroplasty in hip fracture patients. Subjects: We studied subjects who had hip fracture and had had undergone hemiarthroplasty procedure on one or both hips resulting from hip fracture incidents during the 2008-2009 period. Methods: Characteristics of participants were obtained through medical records. The main outcome measures were the functional status of the patient as seen by the subjects’ true ambulatory status, and as measured by Harris Hip Score, Oxford Hip Score, and Hip disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score. The filling time required to fill these questionnaires were also measured. The scoring results, interpretation and filling time of the 3 scores were then quantitatively compared. Results: From the total of 10 subjects studied, we found significantly different scoring results for the 3 scores, however, they were essentially similar in terms of scoring interpretation. The Oxford Hip Score was the quickest tool to be applied in our patients, while the Harris Hip Score was the most objective. Conclusions: The Harris Hip Score, Oxford Hip Score, and Hip disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score are functional outcome evaluation tools that are applicable in the Indonesian setting. The Oxford Hip Score is best used for studies on hip fracture patients, while the Hip disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score is suitable for patient evaluation in the clinical setting.
