The role of low calorie diet in reducing waist circumference in obese patients

Obesity has become one of the main health problems around the world. In Asia-Pacific region, which consisted of developed (Japan, Korea, Australia) and developing countries (Indonesia, China, India) are the most extreme regions with majority of the world’s population and they are facing major health problem that is obesity. Obesity contributes to most of the diseases, like cardiovascular, metabolic and other kind of diseases. It is accumulation of the fat mass either on the abdominal area or around the hip area. It is a cross-sectional research conducted in PT. Unilever, Surabaya, Indonesia. The study took place during the month of September 2002 to December 2002. Research population was the employees with BMI ≥ 25kg/m2 who work in PT. Unilever Surabaya, Indonesia. After eight weeks of low calorie diet, there was significant decrease in body weight and waist circumference. By using the t-test, comparing the 1 st day to 57 th day waist of circumference, the p value was 0.000 with 95% Confidence Interval. For the body weight, on the 1 st and 57 th day there were also significant decrease with p value of 0.000 and 95% Confidence Interval. Thereby, low calorie diet has significant result over the body weight and waist circumference. In addition, low calorie diet is effective for obese patients to reduce body weight and waist circumference.
